About Meo Patacca
Born as an osteria in the setting of Piazza dei Mercanti, the establishment has its roots in an era when Roman squares were the center of social life: here, in the 19th century, the tradition of long Sunday tables was born, where families, friends and acquaintances gathered to eat, drink and sing together. In Trastevere this custom helped preserve a unique popular identity, recounted by authors such as Gioacchino Belli and Trilussa. In that authentic atmosphere, made of conviviality and simplicity, generations of artists and writers found inspiration in direct contact with the Roman people. Today, thanks to our chefs, waiters and resident orchestra, we proudly carry forward that same tradition: good romanesca cuisine, a cuisine humble in its origins but rich in character, which we still prepare today with precision and respect for popular tradition. Every corner of the establishment tells this story. The waiters still dress in period costume, recreating the atmosphere of a Roman inn from the early 19th century, while every evening professional musicians perform Roman and Neapolitan songs and opera romances. Each of the rooms also has its own story to tell: the "Prima Sala", overlooking the kitchen, where Hollywood star Charlton Heston loved to dine; the "Gallo Cornuto" room, with its historic fireplace, overlooked by the "Palchettone" lit by a period skylight; the "Bar" room, with its characteristic American Bar; the large "Cantinone", with its enormous barrels set into the walls and the antique 19th-century press; and finally the "Teatro" room, once nicknamed "Purgatorio", which during the dolce vita hosted evenings of signature jazz with artists such as Bill Coleman, in front of an audience that counted among its regulars an exceptional habitué: Marcello Mastroianni.
